After I quit my job at Porsche Consulting many people came towards me, to speak about their business ideas. They wanted to know, what I thought of them and what potential I see. Being a freelancer now, I had the time to meet up and the experience from many consulting projects.

What I saw, was a big overlap between many business ideas people had and the same number of projects, that were never initiated or implemented.

That is why I want to tell you about five ways to kill your business idea fast:

1. Believe you know everything about your customers without talking to them

Before you even start working on your new business idea, speak to potential customers about it. Are they really having a problem or pain? Does your solution fit their pain, or do they need another solution?

Build a cheap MVP to test your idea fast: What do your potential customers say about it now? Do they like the solution and are they willing to pay for it?

My advice: Put your opinions, thoughts, and ideas out into the world and talk to overs about them, even if it scares the sh** out of you.

2. Believe in success overnight

Yes, we do hear many stories of people becoming successful overnight. But we do not know, how many months and years they have put into their work or how many of their prior ideas failed. Remember that success is a long process and a result of your past experiences.

My advice: Expand your horizon. Visit other places, cultures and get to know many people. Test many ideas and see, what works.

3. Believe another person has all the answers for you

As soon as you start working on your idea and talk to others about it, many people you love will interfere with it: your parents, friends, and family for example. And believe me, everybody will have their own and very different point of view on your idea.

My advice: Tolerate all opinions but question them. Especially if someone is giving you advice on how to build an idea if they have never done it themselves. (It’s a trap!)

4. Believe that the fault lies by someone else

Maybe your business idea is not as good as you think if nobody wants to invest in it.

Maybe you created the wrong product or the wrong market if nobody wants to buy it.

Maybe you are selling the wrong service if nobody reacts to your ads.

Think about it and try and learn from it, rather than blaming others. Also, you can always refer to number one of this list and take accountability for the mistakes you made.

My advice: Think! It is not illegal and take accountability for your ideas.

5. Believe that money will solve everything

If you do not love your idea and you are only doing it, because of the money, forget it! Believe me, that when times are hard and your motivation is low, it is easier to work on an idea you genuinely believe in and love.

My advice: Do whatever makes you happy.
